The story of Moses is far stranger than most people know. You may know about his early beginnings as an abandoned baby in a basket floating down the Nile, rescued by the Pharaoh’s daughter, but did you know he later committed a murder and had to flee? Did you know he really, really, really did not want to do Yahweh’s bidding and tried super-hard to get out of it, multiple times? And those plagues and miracles? Much odder than you think. You’ve probably never read all the details before. The visit to Yahweh atop Mount Sinai? Probably nobody told you Moses returned glowing and with horns? The wandering in the desert for 40 years? The manna from heaven was not popular; the people complained relentlessly. The pillars of cloud and the covenant of the ark? More bizarre than you can imagine. How about the dancing around the Golden Calf? Do you have any idea how badly that ended? The parting of the Red Sea? Did you know that Moses had to hold up his hands (or maybe it was a rod) the whole time? If he let his hands down, oops, the water didn’t stay parted. He needed friends to help him hold his hands up because it was just too tiring. Poor Moses. Just one problem after another. And did Moses ever get to set food in the Promised Land, after all his hard work? What do you think?
