The specialty of author John Dickson Carr (aka Carter Dickson, Carr Dickson, and Roger Fairbairn) was the locked room mystery. His biography is subtitled, The Man Who Explained Miracles. (Buy*)
Most of John Dickson Carr’s books are set in English villages and country houses, and his sleuths are English, but Carr himself was American, the son of a Pennsylvania congressman. As a young man, he moved to England and married an Englishwoman. When he returned to the United States more than 15 years later, he was an internationally known author.
