This is a book designed to skip around in. The author Seth Godin warns right away that if you want a narrative-with-research type of business book, you are in the wrong place. As the subtitle suggests, this is a collection of blog posts, magazine columns, and excerpts from ebooks.
seth godin shares key insights from eight years of writing about marketing and business
Every page is a good read; you can’t open this book at any spot and fail to be interested. Some of Godin’s key themes are that you need to tell the truth or you’ll be found out, that being perceived as big is bad, and that the ability to change quickly is a person or business’s most important asset. He suggests you respect your customers and be authentic. He illustrates all his points with persuasive real-life examples.
Small Is the New Big was published in 2006, and it’s a collection of writings from the previous eight years — so is it still relevant? How much have things changed? His technology references may seem quaint, and of course technology is important. But this is an idea book. If you’re in any doubt as to the relevance of any of his ideas these many years later, you can do a little research. However, since these essays, anecdotes, and bits of advice tend to be about basics, essential truths, enlightened common sense, and straightforward reminders of reality, you’re probably good.
Godin says:
I dare you to read any ten of these essays and still be comfortable settling for what you’ve got. You don’t have to settle for the status quo, for being good enough, for getting by, for working all night.
